AstronomyOutreach network is celebrating women in astronomy!

Latest issue of Sky's Up
celebrates women in astronomy!

To celebrate the significant contributions and discoveries women have made in astronomy and related fields, the AstronomyOutreach network recently published a special issue of our digital magazine — Sky's Up!

The individual stories that unfold within the issue are ones of achievement and challenge. They are the stories of women who have made their mark — like Cassini Project Scientist Linda Spilker or SETI co-founder Jill Tarter — and women who are just beginning their journey in astronomy — like Pluto researcher and outreach guru Caitlin Ahrens or Sepideh Hooshyar, an Iranian woman who is determined to study the stars no matter the obstacles.

In this issue, we highlight legendary discoverers like Carolyn Shoemaker and Jean Mueller; showcase the stunning images of women astrophotographers; touch on the invaluable work women are doing in nonprofits and outreach; and tackle the issue of inequality in astronomy through a Q&A with planetary scientist and inclusivity advocate Christina Richey.

Each of the women featured in this issue are inspiring, and we hope by showcasing the versatile paths they have forged, we can encourage more women to find their passion, resist opposition and reach for the stars!

Issue highlights:

Cassini Mission Project Scientist Dr. Linda Spilker shares her experiences of exploring the solar system for four decades at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and reflects on the evolution she has seen in the workplace for women in astronomy.
Dr. Jill Tarter discusses her path as a pioneer in SETI research, talks about the opportunities presented by the changing field of astrobiology and shares her thoughts on inspiring young people to enter STEM fields.
In our recurring 10 Questions feature, renowned comet discoverer Carolyn Shoemaker answers questions posed by students at Castilleja School in Palo Alto, Calif., about her astronomical work and her favorite find — Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9.
Astrophotographer Terry Mann shares some of her stunning skyscapes, which capture inspiring sights like the ethereal beauty of auroras and the expansive Milky Way stretching across the inky night sky.
The issue also includes columns from famed comet hunter David Levy and the SETI Institute's Seth Shostak, an astrophotography galley, sky calendars highlighting upcoming celestial events, star maps, a lunar calendar and much more.
Founded in 2000, the AstronomyOutreach network (AOn) was created to encourage and celebrate public outreach efforts by astronomers of all levels. This nonprofit organization has tasked itself with forging connections between individual astronomers, astronomy clubs and larger astronomy and space education initiatives. Published by AOn, Sky's Up digital magazine is made possible through a generous contribution from Explore Scientific.
