Welcome to the world of microscopy!

The eyepiece of a microscope is a unique window into the world around. Through it you can see the ordinary become extraordinary as you explore everyday things like pollen and salt on the smallest of scales.

In our Explore One 900x Beginner Microscope set — which is profiled below — you will find a number of prepared slides that serve as jumping off points for investigations. Among those are the three shown here — pollen, hydrilla verticillata leaf and onion bulb epidermis.

These specimens do more than reveal hidden details, they spark questions and launch young minds on their own learning adventures.

What's behind those seasonal sneezes?
What's a-peeling about studying onion skin?

A thin layer of onion bulb epidermis can provide amazing insights into cellular structure when viewed through a microscope. At the eyepiece, a simple sliver transforms into neat rows of cells with clearly defined walls, cytoplasm and nuclei.

While analyzing these basic building blocks, a budding biologist might notice these cells are missing something that is usually a plant cell standard — chloroplasts. Why? Could it have something to do with where the bulbs grow?
