Meet the Moon!

As the second brightest object in the sky (after the Sun), the Moon is a steady presence in all our lives. However, even though it is Earth's closest neighbor, many people have never really taken a good long look at our planet's influential satellite!

Currently, the Moon is in its Last Quarter phase, which is an ideal time for viewing. The Full Moon can be overwhelmingly bright when observed through an optical aid, making it hard to really explore distinct features. However, when the Moon is in one of its quarter or crescent phases, inspiring sights like lunar maria, which appear as vast plains; large craters; and rilles that appear as winding channels become easier to discern. As a bonus, these times in the lunar cycle create a crisp edge where the visible and shadowed portions of the Moon meet. This edge, which is known as the terminator line, truly showcases the jagged ridges and dips that define the lunar surface.

Although it is not as flashy as a billowing nebula or a spiraling galaxy, the Moon is a stunning sight in its own right, and it deserves a deeper look!
